Maintaining Your Hair Extensions During the Summer Season

The summer season is officially two weeks away, and we know you are looking forward to beach vacations and sipping Palomas by the poolside. With the fun of summer, it can also bring about harshness on your hair extensions from things such as excessive heat and humidity. Salt water, sweat, swimming, and even sunbathing can turn your luxurious hair extensions into a complete frizzy and tangled nightmare, but we know just the perfect regimen to ensure your tresses are always summer ready!

Maintaining your hair extensions during the summer season is extremely important in ensuring the longevity of your tresses is maximized. Hair extensions should be treated just like your natural hair, handling them with care and compassion. Although the summer season is a time to relax and brings out some of the best memories, it's also important to ensure your hair is always in top tier shape. Keep reading to find out our recommendations for maintaining your extensions this summer and beyond.

Maintaining Your Hair Extensions During the Summer

As mentioned above, we are 100% in support of maintaining our hair extensions during the summer months. With summer normally being the hottest season of the year, we want to ensure you’re equipped with the knowledge going into the season for taking care of your hair extensions from weft extensions to clip-ins, tape-ins and even your u-part and lace front wigs. Maintenance is the key to longevity and will be your BFF this summer season.

Weft Extensions

We’ll never discourage you from taking that dip in the pool, but we also want to ensure you are protecting your weft extensions when doing so. Don’t allow your extensions to soak too long in salt or chlorine filled water as the chemicals in the water will cause your extensions to become brittle and dry. Instead, allow your weft extensions to soak in fresh water first as the fresh water will absorb throughout your extensions and the chlorine or salt water will not absorb as deeply. We highly encourage you to wear your weft extensions in a bun, braid or even protecting them with a super cute swimming cap.

Once you’ve enjoyed the water activities, immediately co-wash your weft extensions to ensure you're maintaining your hair throughout the summer season. Note: It's extremely important to make sure once your water activities are over that you immediately co-wash your hair extensions because you don't want to run the risk of damaging your extensions with the chlorine or salt water.

Tape-In and Clip-In Extensions

We absolutely love the seamlessness, versatility and convenience of tape-in and clip-in extensions, but know that when you’re in the hot summer sun, putting on things such as sunscreen and other forms of SPF or lotion to ensure you’re protected can sometimes slip into your extensions, potentially causing the SPF to come in contact with the adhesive on your tape-in extensions. A pro tip we recommend is after applying your SPF, ensure you’ve throughly washed your hands to avoid getting any of the extra residue in your hair. We're all about ensuring those hairstyles hold up in the summer heat!

Brushing Often

Using our extensions friendly wavy hair brush to brush your extensions often will help maintain your hair and avoid tangles this summer. Our favorite wavy hairbrush has fine bristles that are designed to easily glide through your hair extensions, whereas the teeth on other hairbrushes run the risk of yanking and tangling your hair extensions. As you’re detangling your tresses, ensure you are beginning at the bottom, working your way to the top of your extensions, for maximizing detangling. Additionally, when brushing throughout your curly tresses, we only recommend a Denman brush to help define and detangle those curls for maximum results. Washing Often

Just like brushing your hair, washing your hair often is also important. In the summer, our pores tend to produce more sweat, which causes a buildup over our extensions and natural hair. To prevent this build up from sitting on your hair extensions, we recommend washing your extensions weekly. For curly haircare, conditioner only wash (CoWash) is recommended 3 times per week. This is a non-negotiable step and essential for the best results. For our straight and waxy textures, conditioner only wash (CoWash) is recommended 2-3 times per week.
